Acoustics 2024 Welcome
Welcome to Acoustics 2024, Acoustics in the Sun. On behalf of the organising committee, I wish everyone a warm welcome and an enjoyable visit to the Gold Coast, especially those who have travelled from interstate or overseas.
Acoustics in the Sun is the culmination of over two years of planning. The decision to have the conference at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre is to give everyone the opportunity to embrace what the Gold Coast and Queensland has to offer. Close to the conference venue you can walk along kilometres of pristine white sand beaches and swim in the ocean. For those who are staying longer, there is the allure of multiple theme parks or the sub-tropical rainforest and attractions of the Gold Coast Hinterland. Finally, for those who like other forms of entertainment, there are The Star Gold Coast Casino and Pacific Fair Shopping Centre to the south.
Why have a physical conference instead of a virtual conference? Well, the Australian Acoustical Society has members located in academia, industry, consulting, defence, software development and equipment manufacturing. The annual conference consists not only of technical presentations and workshops, but a Trade Exhibition displaying the latest in instrumentation, software and noise control products, social events such as the Welcome Function and Dinner, and the Annual General Meeting of the Australian Acoustical Society. These additional events allow the exchange of ideas, gaining of knowledge and insight that would otherwise be missing from a virtual conference. How often has the genesis of a new idea, a business opportunity, networking connection or the solution to a previously unsolvable problem arise from a casual conversation or remark made at these other types of events? The annual conference also highlights the acoustic industry in Australia to graduates and newcomers, something that is becoming increasingly important due to the difficulty of recruiting and retaining staff in a specialist niche field. I applaud the organisations that recognise the importance in having their employees regularly attend Australian Acoustical Society conferences.
Acoustics 2024 has a full technical program scheduled consisting of plenary, keynote, invited and technical presentations and workshops, divided over four concurrent streams. On the Thursday evening the Conference Dinner will be held at the Convention Centre after the Annual General Meeting of the Australian Acoustical Society.
There is a Welcome Function after the opening plenary Wednesday afternoon. The Trade Exhibition will run Thursday and Friday, with complimentary barista coffee provided on both days to keep everyone alert and functioning. The morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea on both days will also be held in the Exhibition Area.
I hope that everyone enjoys the technical and social program that has been planned for Acoustics 2024, Acoustics in the Sun. Enjoy your stay at the Gold Coast and embrace what the Coast has to offer!
Yours in acoustics,
Michael Hayne
